Welcome to my blog. I’m a Canadian paleoartist and natural history illustrator (see http://csotonyi.com for my online gallery) with an academic background in ecology (M.Sc.) and microbiology (Ph.D.).
I specialize in photo-realistic restorations of dinosaurs, paleo-environments and extant animals. My techniques encompass both traditional and digital media. I’ve worked with publishing companies (including Science magazine, National Geographic and Scholastic Inc.) and museums (e.g. Royal Tyrrell Museum of palaeontology, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Manitoba Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, Royal Ontario Museum), based in Canada, the US, Europe, Russia, Mexico and Australia.
I was born in Hungary but moved to Canada in 1978, where I completed all of my education, including a B.Sc. in Ecology and Environmental Biology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, a M.Sc. in Ecology in the same university, and finally a PhD in microbiology at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. This academic route has helped me published research papers on a wide range of biological subjects, from pollination mutualisms in Utah, to the effects of trampling on moss in Jasper National Park in Alberta , to on bacteria living in exotic deep ocean hydrothermal vent ecosystems  and in terrestrial salt springs, to unusual bacteria that bridge the gap between major photosynthetic physiological modes.
